Part 4 - Connecting Rod - basics

The Connecting Rod

The Connecting Rod usually called a CON ROD is basically a linkage between the crankshaft and the piston. It has a SMALL END and a BIG END, and that’s what they’re called. No prizes for guessing which is which. The con rod is very important as it carries bearings that ensure smooth action and it transfers the force applied to the piston to the crank pin and ultimately rotates the crankshaft.
Various holes help feed oil to the bearing (shown below) and the rods shape is designed to be a light as possible but also be able to stand the forces tranfered through it.

The cross-section of the con-rod is an I-beam profile, this provides great strength and makes the rod as light as possible.
